Green Star FAQs
Can off-site renewable energy (e.g. GreenPower) be apportioned over the length of the building power supply contract?
Yes. For projects targeting the Reference Building/Fitout Pathway, where the percentage of off-site renewable energy is procured in stages over the length of the supply contract, the effective percentage of the supply contract can be applied.
This is done by multiplying the percentage of off-site supply by the percentage of the contract length for which this uptake will be relevant.
For example: A power supply contract for a Green Star – Interiors v1.3 project that achieves Practical Completion in Jan 2019 is in place for 5 years from 2019 to 2023. If the power supply contract includes 20% renewable supply for Jan 2019 to Dec 2020 (i.e., 2 years, equivalent to 40% of total contract length) and then 70% renewable supply from Jan 2021 to Dec 2023 (i.e., 3 years, equivalent to 60% of the total contract length), the effective off-site renewable percentage shall be calculated as:
Σ [Renewable supply (%) x percentage of contract length (%)] = 0.2(0.4) + 0.7(0.6) = 50%
The effective off-site supply percentage will be entered into the ‘Off-site Renewable electricity percentage as stipulated within the building’s power supply contract’ cell within the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculator.
Please refer to the Accredited GreenPower®/Off-site Renewables criteria within the Greenhouse Gas Emissions credit and FAQ F-00239 to find more information on the minimum power supply contract length for Green Star – Interiors, Green Star – Design & As Built, or Green Star – Railway Stations projects. Projects will not be rewarded for off-site energy supply beyond the nominated five or ten year period immediately following Practical Completion.
For further information on what off-site renewable energy supply is eligible in Green Star, please refer to the Climate positive buildings and our net zero ambitions available on the GBCA website.
